How Long Does Biohazard Cleanup Take?

Families ask this for practical reasons: a funeral to schedule, tenants to house, a business to reopen. The honest answer depends on the situation, and this guide gives the real ranges, plus the stages that cannot be rushed.

Typical timelines

Most single room biohazard cleanups take between four and eight hours on site. A death found quickly is usually finished within a day. Deaths found after weeks, multi room crime scenes and hoarding properties take one to five days. The pace is set by spread, materials removed, and disinfection contact and testing time.

The stages, and why they take the time they take

Assessment and setup run about an hour: mapping spread (including inside materials), sealing containment, and agreeing the scope with you. Removal is the variable stage: every mattress, carpet section and piece of flooring that leaves takes cutting, packaging and manifesting as regulated waste. Cleaning and disinfection includes waiting: disinfection only counts at the product's full contact time, and crews do not shortcut chemistry. Verification adds surface testing and, where needed, a second disinfection pass. Odor treatment finishes the job; where fluids reached structure, sealing treatments need curing time before the space is handed back.

What stretches a job

Spread beyond the first room; fluids in subfloor, wall bases or ductwork; a death discovered late (the timeline physics are in our guide on what happens over time after an unattended death); hoarded volume that must be sorted rather than cleared; and access problems such as upper floors without lifts. Police release timing can also gate the start after a crime, though not the cleanup itself.

Planning around the cleanup

Tell the crew lead your fixed dates (funeral, viewings, a tenancy start) at the first call. Crews sequence work around them routinely, for example finishing the affected room first so the rest of the house is usable for family. The overall process from first call is laid out on the how it works page.

Questions families ask us

Can a cleanup be done the same day I call?

Usually, yes for the crew's arrival in metro areas, and a single room job is often finished the same day. Larger jobs (unattended deaths found late, hoarding properties, multi room scenes) run to days, and the crew lead confirms the window after assessment.

Why does testing add time?

Disinfection products need their full contact time to work, and surface tests need time to read. Skipping either produces a space that looks clean and tests dirty later. The testing stage is short compared with the cost of redoing the job.

Do I have to leave the house during cleanup?

Only the affected area needs to be empty. Many families stay elsewhere for comfort, but for a one room job in a larger home, staying in unaffected rooms is usually possible. The crew lead will advise honestly for your layout.
